Write it Down!

Sometimes the basics are the things we need to hear again and again...

I was coaching a client via skype this morning as she prepared for an audition in NYC for 'The Good Wife'  and it was apparent that she had a very busy day ahead of her.  Auditions, bookings, photo shoots  - lots of appointments.  The phone rang several times as appts were changed - one forgotten appt rescheduled and all the balls were juggled without incident.  What was interesting is that in the midst of re-scheduling and adding to the schedule - nothing was written down.  Not even PDA'd.

About an hour after this meeting, I was reading a blog about keeping control of your career and the most important piece of that blog was advice you have heard over and over, but is always worth repeating...  write down your goals.

Your list should be comprehensive and include goals for all aspects of your life and growth, taking care of mind, body and spirit.

As actors, your goals will include...

-Physical well being: excercise and diet

-Training: classes in technique, on-camera, voice, hosting.  Focusing on your particular area of interest

-Agent:  Build a relationship with a great agent that believes in you and shares your vision for your career.

-Marketing U!:  Solid headshots that represent your type, once you know what your type is.  More type info herePostcards, business cards and a website so you can stay connected and be found.

-Networking - get connected.  What's happening in your community?  Who are the indie directors/producers, casting directors, up and coming filmmakers?  Know your market and the type of work available to you.

Details.  It's all about the details.  You have to know what you want to achieve and have a  written plan.   Set some timeframes for yourself - be accountable for  achieving your dreams.  Make your list  of what you need to do with specifics and details.

No matter what you are going after... being an actor, a doctor  or a dog walker.  You need a plan.  And not just in your head - an actual piece of paper (or a document you can print out) that says what you mean to do.  Then, of course you need to take action on the list.  But your first step is the list.  Make one.  Write down all the big things, the small things and especially the dream of all dreams.  Then get started.

My dad gave me some very good advice on this topic, "If you don't know what you're doing, you can't do it."  Yep.  True.

How is your list looking? No?  No list?  Well I suggest you get started!   Here's to accomplishing your dreams.

Step 1:  Write it down.
