AUDITION for Agatha Christie’s murder mystery “SPIDER’S WEB”
Sunday: FEB. 24TH, and Tuesday: FEB. 26TH
Directed By: John F. Sabo (772) 233-1264 (johnsabo1@earthlink.net)
The Barn Theatre is scheduled to have Auditions for “Spider’s Web” by Agatha Christie on Sun, and Tues. nights at 7 pm on Feb. 24th, & 26th, 2008 at the Barn Theatre. Call back times to be announced.
The show will open Friday night April 4th, 2008 and run thru Sunday afternoon, April 20th. Performances are scheduled for 8pm on Wed., Thurs., Fri. and Sat. nights and 2pm on Sunday afternoons. There is a strike of the set after the last Sunday performance and/or on Monday morning for each cast and crewmember.
A rehearsal schedule will be set up to work around the schedules of the actors who are selected. In general, however, rehearsals will be on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday nights, with an occasional additional other night or afternoon. After the first rehearsal and prior to the final week before opening night, actors will only be called to rehearsal when their scene is scheduled.
The cast consists of 3 women and 8 men. It is an Agatha Christie “murder mystery” that takes place entirely, (where else?) in the drawing room of an English country estate. “Clarissa, the second wife of Henry Hailsham-Brown, is adept at spinning tales of adventure for the entertainment of her bored diplomatic circle. But when a murder takes place in her own drawing-room, she finds live drama much harder to cope with, especially when she suspects the murderer may be someone she knows and cares about.”
The women’s roles include:
1) Pippa, an awkward, but precocious, 12 year old;
2) Mildred Peake, a widowed middle aged character, the gardener/caretaker; and
3) Clarissa Hailsham-Brown, in her twenties/thirties, the charmingly free-spirited lady of the
house married to her older, more proper and staid husband, Henry ("dull as dishwater").
There are many interesting roles for men:
1) Henry Hailsham-Brown, the proper, staid “dull as dishwater” older husband.
2) Sir Rowland Delahaye in his 50’s, charming and distinguished.
3) Hugo Birch, an irascible type in his 60’s.
4) Jeremy Warrender an elegant young man who’s always flirting with Clarissa.
5) Oliver Costello - the disturbed mystery man who brings trouble the quiet household.
6) Elgin, their very English butler.
7) Inspector Lord, detective from the local police.
8) Constable Jones, the Inspector’s trusty, investigative companion.

LOGLINE: Three devastating teenage stories fuse beneath the calm of a quiet, average neighborhood.
SYNOPSIS: Narrowly surviving a fierce suicide attempt, 17-year-old Jess returns to face summer school while apparently harboring a dark secret. A former A-student, Jess has become cynical and withdrawn. Her single mom, beside herself with worry, is helpless.
Jess’s best and only friend is Steve, a gay, aspiring artist preparing to leave for college. Since being “outed” by Jess’s classmate Connor, Steve has brazenly embraced who he is and not looked back.
But Connor, now dedicated to becoming a pro boxer, has turned his back on both of them. Afflicted with a speech impediment and painful shyness, he harbors conflicts of his own. Focusing all his energy on training for an upcoming exhibition bout, Connor lives with his single dad, a cop, and his mentally ailing grandfather.
Additionally, 16-year-old supermarket cashier Ann is facing pressure to succeed by her driven single mother who happens to be high school principal. Ann has never had a boyfriend. When she develops an obsessive crush on Connor she falls for him hard.
One drunken night, Connor allows himself to be seduced by Ann. After their backseat sexual encounter, Ann pursues him for a real relationship. Connor, under pressure from his coach, shrugs this unwanted distraction. Ann becomes convinced that her body doesn’t measure up and is to blame. She develops an eating disorder, and forced vomiting becomes her destructive secret.
Meanwhile Jess finds an unexpected parallel in her summer school teacher Owen. Strict but caring, Owen slowly opens up about his personal life. He is distraught and unable to accept the looming divorce of his wife of twenty years. The unlikely pair of student and teacher begin to bond.
But just when Jess seems to be returning to her old self, something sets her off and she becomes angrier and more negative than ever, leaving her mom and teacher at a loss and frightened.
When Connor’s big fight arrives, everyone attends with myriad emotions. Connor’s estranged comrades Jess and Steve. His wannabe girlfriend Ann with her new party friends. His dad who is now dating Jess’s mom. This is Connor’s chance to go pro and leave troubles behind. But how will the outcome affect Ann’s desperate hope for love?
Finally, one momentous summer night, three intermingled teenage secrets reach critical mass. A hidden act of unbridled passion erupts into a vicious act of senseless, bloody violence. Jess, Connor and Ann each come face to face with their paralyzing fears, and desperation threatens their lives.
On this night Jess’s mom discovers what drove her daughter to suicide… Ann’s career-minded mother confronts her hospitalized daughter’s health… and Connor’s dad arrives on the site of a shocking roadside scene. Their worlds will never be the same.
It is the teacher, Owen, who realizes that he has perhaps learned the most about moving through the journey of life.
Featuring compelling, identifiable teenage and adult characters, ROUGH WINDS is a gripping drama which explores the theme of needing to find inner acceptance before you can travel to a new place. Like growing up, you must ride through the storm to reach a clear sky of hope and dreams. Told realistically and unflinchingly with few characters/locations, it presents a vivid, unforgettable story.
Character Breakdowns:
JESS: She’s a vulnerable 17 year-old, with an attitude problem. Finally you discover she pushes everybody away, because she’s been raped.
STEVE, 17, Jess’s best friend compassionate and witty, He is openly gay, He gets bashed by his secret lover.
SALLY, Jess’s loving mom in her 40s or 50’s. Average mom. She worries a lot about Jess who has tried to commit suicide.
TOM, an unassuming, quiet, educated man in his 40’s or 50’s. He is Sally’s brother and is hiding a horrible secret.
CONNOR ,a 18 year old boxer, who’s focused on going pro. He is in the closet and has serious anger issues.
HANK, a goodhearted cop in his 40’s. He is Connor’s father.
COUCH, tough guy, kind of sexist and homophobic. He’s a bad influence on Connor with out noticing.
ANN, only 16,A cute girl-next-door type, with self confidence problems that turns bulimic.
KATHERINE, Ann’s mom. She’s in her 40’s. She is a workaholic principal who doesn’t notice Ann is in a downwards spiral.
LISA- she’s 19, high school drop out, very beautiful, always popular and cool. Becomes Ann’s good friend, but turns out to be a horrible influence on Ann.
BARRY 18 - he’s a good friend of Connor’s and Lisa’s boyfriend. He’s wealthy, good-looking and all he worries about is scoring with the ladies.
